Based on observations by interplanetary spacecraft Cassini, researchers have theorised that on Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune and Uranus lightning could split carbon atoms from atmospheric methane, forming soot which, as it falls, hardens into chunks of graphite and then diamond.
Unfortunately on Saturn, these diamond ‘hail stones’ eventually melt into a liquid sea in the planet’s hot core. However, on Uranus and Neptune, the atmospheric conditions mean these uncut diamonds may last forever. So all you diamond lovers just need to travel a little bit further across the universe.
